Frequently Asked Questions

Plywood is a high-strength manufactured wood panel made by gluing together thin sheets of wood veneers (called plies) under high heat and pressure. The wood grains of adjacent plies are rotated 90 degrees relative to each other (cross-graining). This structural cross-lamination gives plywood exceptional strength, stability, and resistance to splitting or warping.

Plywood is graded based on its adhesive properties and moisture resistance:
  • MR (Moisture Resistant) Grade: Ideal for interior furniture and dry areas. It is water-resistant but not waterproof.
  • BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) Grade: Semi-waterproof plywood suitable for semi-wet areas like kitchens and semi-exposed panels.
  • BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Grade: Completely waterproof Marine grade plywood, bonded with phenol-formaldehyde resin. It can withstand prolonged exposure to water and weather, making it ideal for bathroom cabinets, marine structures, and high-moisture zones.

For wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens, BWP (Boiling Water Proof) plywood (also known as Marine Grade Plywood) is the best choice. It utilizes waterproof synthetic resins to ensure the veneers do not delaminate even under constant exposure to water. BWR grade is also a cost-effective option for kitchen dry zones, but BWP is recommended for long-term durability.

The choice of thickness depends on the application:
  • 18mm Plywood: Recommended for load-bearing structures such as wardrobe carcasses, beds, dining tables, kitchen cabinets, and main partitions.
  • 12mm Plywood: Ideal for vertical partitions, drawer sides, back panels, and lightweight furniture.

You can identify high-quality plywood by checking the following parameters:
  1. ISI Mark: Look for the genuine ISI stamp (IS:303 for MR/BWR grade and IS:710 for BWP marine grade).
  2. Thickness & Weight: High-quality Gurjan plywood is heavy and maintains a uniform thickness across all four edges.
  3. Core Quality: Check the edges for gaps, overlapping layers, or hollow spaces, which weaken structural integrity.
  4. Sound Test: Knock the center of the plywood; a clear, metallic ringing sound indicates a dense, gap-free core, while a hollow sound suggests air gaps.
