Laminates

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about decorative laminates? Find answers to the most common queries below.

Decorative laminate (commonly referred to as Sunmica in India) is an artificial surface material made by pressing together multiple layers of heavy-duty kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resins, topped by a printed decorative paper layer with melamine resin, and finished with a protective overlay. These layers are fused under intense heat and pressure to create a highly durable, stiff sheet.

The difference lies in their manufacturing pressure and application:
  • HPL (High-Pressure Laminate): Manufactured under high pressure (70 to 100 bar). It is exceptionally durable, impact-resistant, and suitable for high-traffic horizontal surfaces like kitchen counters, tabletops, and heavy-use furniture.
  • LPL (Low-Pressure Laminate): Also known as Melamine boards, produced under lower pressure. The decorative paper is fused directly onto a particle board or MDF core. LPL is suitable for vertical surfaces, lightweight shelves, and side panels of cabinets.

The choice depends on your design style and usage:
  • Matt/Suede Finish: Best for daily heavy use. It hides fingerprints, scratches, and dust particles exceptionally well, making it low-maintenance.
  • Acrylic/High-Gloss Finish: Creates a modern, luxury, reflective look that makes the kitchen appear larger. However, it requires frequent wiping to clean smudges and fingerprints.
  • Textured Finish: Mimics natural wood grain or stone but is slightly harder to wipe clean if kitchen oil/grease settles in the grooves.

Yes, "Sunmica" is simply a brand name of laminates that became so popular in India that it became a generic term used to describe all decorative laminates. Just like how "Xerox" is used for photocopying, Sunmica is used interchangeably with laminates in common trade language.

Laminates are very easy to maintain:
  1. Wipe down regularly with a soft, clean, damp cloth.
  2. For stubborn stains, use a mild dish soap solution. Avoid bleach, strong acids, or abrasive steel wool scrubbers, which will permanently scratch or dull the surface.
  3. Avoid allowing water to pool on laminate joints or edges, as moisture can seep underneath and cause the adhesive to fail or the core board to swell.
